4. Product Introduction
The HMS AB7652-F is an Anybus X gateway that translates between Profinet RT and Modbus TCP networks. It is the glue that connects a Siemens S7-1500 PLC to a Modbus TCP energy meter, or a Schneider M580 controller to Profinet remote I/O. The gateway acts as a Profinet device (slave) on one side and a Modbus TCP server or client on the other, with the internal data mapping table handling all the byte swapping and scaling.
What sets the Anybus X platform apart is the configuration flexibility. You can set up the gateway entirely through a standard web browser—no proprietary software required. The integrated 2-port Ethernet switch allows daisy-chaining multiple devices without an external switch, saving space in a crowded panel. The gateway also supports up to 512 bytes of cyclic I/O data in each direction, which is more than enough for most machine-level applications. A word of caution: the AB7652-F specifically supports Profinet RT, not Profinet IRT (isochronous real-time). If your motion control application requires IRT, you will need a different gateway.
5. Application Scenarios & Field Experience
Part 1 – Narrative Paragraph
The biggest challenge when integrating a new Modbus TCP device into an existing Profinet plant is not cabling—it is the addressing and data mapping mismatch. Profinet uses a slot-based I/O model with byte offsets, while Modbus TCP uses register addresses (4xxxx or 3xxxx). I have spent hours manually calculating byte swaps and scaling factors on a notepad, only to find the PLC programmer and the instrument engineer were using different endian conventions. The AB7652-F eliminates that headache with a web-based mapping table where you specify the source and destination addresses, word order (little-endian or big-endian), and scaling factor. The configuration upload takes 30 seconds, and the gateway starts passing data.
Part 2 – Numbered List (Application Scenarios)
- Energy Monitoring – Profinet PLC to Modbus Power Meters – A Siemens S7 controller reads energy consumption data (voltage, current, power factor) from Modbus TCP power meters in a distribution panel. The gateway handles the register-to-I/O mapping, eliminating custom FC blocks in the PLC.
- Building Automation – Modbus BMS to Profinet Chiller Controllers – The AB7652-F acts as a Modbus TCP client on the building management side, polling a Profinet chiller controller for temperature, pressure, and valve status, then forwarding the data to the central BMS via Modbus.
- Water Treatment – Profinet SCADA to Modbus Pump Drives – A remote SCADA system using Profinet communicates with variable frequency drives (VFDs) that only support Modbus TCP. The gateway provides the protocol translation and the integrated switch allows a daisy-chain to multiple drives.
- Portable Test Rigs – Protocol Conversion for Commissioning – Field engineers use the AB7652-F as a temporary gateway to connect a laptop running Modbus TCP simulation software to a Profinet-controlled test bench. The web interface allows quick reconfiguration without software installation.
Part 3 – Short Field Story
A beverage factory had a new high-speed filler with a Profinet controller, but the existing flowmeters were Modbus TCP only. The plant’s automation engineer spent two days trying to write a custom Profinet-Modbus block in TIA Portal, getting frustrated with byte alignment issues. We shipped the AB7652-F pre-configured with the required mapping—flow rate to Profinet input word 2, totalizer to word 6. The engineer installed it, powered it up, and had data flowing within 10 minutes. The filler was running that same day.
